What Ant Species Are Common in Ontario?
Different ant species require different treatment approaches. Correct identification is the first step.
Carpenter Ants
Ontario's largest ant (8–13mm), usually black. They excavate wood to build nesting galleries, causing structural damage over time. They prefer moist, water-damaged wood — often a sign of an underlying moisture problem.
Pavement Ants
Small (2–3mm), dark brown ants that nest under sidewalks, driveways, and foundations. Common inside homes in spring and summer, entering through foundation cracks in search of food.
Odorous House Ants
Small dark ants that release a coconut-like odour when crushed. They nest in wall voids and under flooring. Difficult to control with sprays alone as colonies have multiple queens.
Pharaoh Ants
Tiny (1–2mm), yellow-brown ants common in apartments, hospitals, and commercial buildings. They have multiple queens and "bud" when threatened by spraying — splitting into multiple new colonies. Require bait-only treatment.
Why Do Ants Keep Coming Back?
Spraying worker ants is like cutting the tops off weeds — the colony underneath keeps producing more. Effective ant control requires reaching the queen.
- infoAnt colonies can contain tens of thousands of workers and multiple queens
- infoContact sprays kill workers but alert the colony — triggering "budding" in some species
- infoSlow-acting gel baits are carried back to the colony and kill the queen from within

Our Ant Treatment Approach
Species Identification
Correct ID determines the right treatment — pharaoh ants, for example, require bait-only; spraying triggers colony splitting.
Gel Bait Placement
Slow-acting gel bait placed along ant trails and near nest entry points — workers carry it back to the colony.
Perimeter Treatment
Residual insecticide is applied around the exterior foundation to intercept foraging ants before they enter.
Direct Nest Treatment
For carpenter ants, we locate and treat satellite nests inside wall voids directly. We also advise on moisture issues that attract them.
Ant Exterminator FAQs
Do carpenter ants cause structural damage to homes?expand_more
Yes. Carpenter ants hollow out wood to build nesting galleries — weakening structural members over time. They're attracted to moist or water-damaged wood, so finding them often indicates a water intrusion problem. Treatment should be paired with identifying and fixing the moisture source.
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?expand_more
Contact sprays only kill workers — the queen and colony survive and replenish. Some species (like pharaoh ants) respond to spraying by "budding" — splitting into multiple new colonies, making the problem worse. Effective treatment uses slow-acting baits that workers carry back to eliminate the queen.
How long does ant treatment take to work?expand_more
You'll see a reduction in ant activity within 2–7 days of bait placement. Full colony elimination typically takes 2–4 weeks. Do not use any other ant sprays during this period — it can repel ants from the bait and prevent it from working.
Are ant treatments safe for children and pets?expand_more
Yes. Gel baits are applied in cracks, crevices, and stations inaccessible to children and pets. Exterior perimeter spray is applied outside the home. Your technician will provide specific post-treatment instructions for your situation.
